Pre-Ripened Pears
The tasty D'Anjou pear comes directly from Washington State - ripe, soft, juicy, sweet and ready to eat NOW, thanks to CMI's pre-ripening technology.
The pre-ripening process requires packed and palletized pears to be gradually warmed until they reach the low 60s. Ethylene gas, a natural ripening agent, that is also used to ripen bananas, is then inserted into the rooms for several hours.
The pears are moved into cooling rooms where they remain for two or three days. The entire process can take as many as five days from start to finish.
When the fruit warms again on the store shelf, the pears ripen more quickly because the process has already been triggered.
Pre-ripened pears should have special signage and be displayed separately from other pears to let consumers know their benefits and proper handling.
